Hot Yoga, or Bikram Yoga is a style of yoga which involves
26 poses and two types of breathing. Ideal conditions for this
type of yoga include a room heated to 105º F with 40% humidity.
Classes are guided by a precise dialogue and last about 90 minutes.
They are beginner classes, but are effective for all skill levels.
Bikram Yoga was developed by Bikram Choudhury, founder of the
Yoga College of India. Choudhury was born in Calcutta in 1946
and began yoga at the age of four. He studied yoga under Bishnu
Ghosh, a well-known Indian physical culturist. Bikram practiced
yoga four to six hours a day at Ghosh’s College of Physical
Education. He won the National India Yoga Championship at age
thirteen.
While lifting weights at age seventeen, Choudhury injured his
knee so severely that doctors did not think he would ever walk
again. Unwilling to accept such predictions, Bikram returned to
Ghosh’s school for treatment. Within seven months he made
a full recovery. Ghosh inspired Chudhury to set up yoga schools
throughout India and two in Japan. Today, Bikram Yoga is a worldwide
phenomenon.
