Power yoga is a Westernized version of Indian Ashtanga Yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga emphasizes flexibility and mental concentration.
It was brought to the West by devotees of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
The term ‘power yoga’ was coined by yoga teacher and
author Beryl Bendere Birch.
Benefits of power yoga include:
• Increased strength, stamina and flexibility
• Improved ability to focus
• Relief from tension and anxiety
• Maintenance of proper posture
• Added muscle tone
• Release of bodily toxins through sweat
• Great training for athletes
Modern power yoga draws from other classic yoga styles then expands
upon them. For example, poses are held longer and breathing is
altered further. As with most forms of yoga, the goal is to remain
graceful and peaceful throughout. Such a free-flowing, dance-like
routine belies the vigorous workout being attained.
