Yoga mats are among the most basic and beneficial yoga accessories.
Mats are used by beginners and experts alike and are useful in
any style of yoga. Besides adding comfort to a hard surface, a
good yoga mat will improve balance and stability. Nearly everyone
is stronger on one side of their body than the other, A mat can
help level out this asymmetry.
When shopping for yoga mats consider the following:
• Size and Weight – Look for one that is lightweight
and easy to carry.
• Durability – A good mat will stand up to repeated
uses and washings.
• Grip – The mat should stick to the floor, but not
your feet. The grip should remain the same, even if you sweat
profusely.
• Outer Material – Check to see if dust and lint can
be shaken off easily.
Yoga mats are designed to reduce the risk of injuries caused
by slippery surfaces. Thin mats used to be the standard but they
provide little protection for elbows, knees and hips. A traditional
sticky mat may be used in tandem with a softer pad for added comfort.
Try out several models, pinch them, rub them, get them wet and
be sure to ask plenty of questions.
