Starting a yoga studio is a daunting task, which requires a
lot more than just being good at yoga. Years of yoga expertise
will not make up for a lack of business sense. In fact, it’s
more likely that a businessperson with an interest in yoga will
succeed than vice versa. Starting your own studio can be fulfilling,
personally and financially, but first, there are many things to
consider.
Anyone considering starting a yoga studio must be willing to
learn about finances, budgeting, bookkeeping and marketing. Before
you even begin, it’s a good practice to plan on needing
about 50% more capital than you expect. You must be able and willing
to work long hours, especially in the beginning. It’s hard
work, and nights and weekend will have to be sacrificed.
A yoga studio, just like any other small business will not always
run smoothly. Checks will bounce, employees won’t work out
and the numbers will not always add up. You must expect to make
mistakes and be willing to learn from them. Perhaps most importantly,
you must be passionate, not only about yoga, but about business
as well.
